Fix Your Beaus Lines

Lines On Fingernails

Beaus lines are lines on fingernails, which extend from one side of your fingernail to the other horizontally.

They are also referred to as transverse lines.

These lines in finger nails, are not to be confused with ridges which run vertically, from the lunar (half moon) to the tip of the nail. These types of lines are very common and can happen because of aging.

Having ridges which run from one side of the nail to the other, can affect the appearance and growth of your fingernails, the lines can very in width and depth.

This line can look like a small indentation across the nail, or quite a large ridge running across the nail, the ridges can look darkened in color and the fingernail can look dark.

How do lines on fingernails happen

They can occur if you are deficient in zinc or iron, or you may be malnourished. A change in your diet, is very important, if you are not eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

It is quite common for these horizontal ridges to happen to chemotherapy patients.

Lines in nails can happen in response to diseases, such as syphilis, uncontrolled diabetes, myocarditis (inflammation of heart muscle), and peripheral vascular disease. High fevers can bring on this type of line in the nail due to measles, mumps, and pneumonia. Chemotherapy has been known to cause this problem also.

They may result from an infection or problem to the nail fold, where the fingernail begins to form. The nail fold is the skin which goes all around the fingernail and keeps the nail bed in place.

These lines in nails can also be caused if you have had an injury to this area of the fingernail.

Many times they will be noticed in one nail.

Treatment For Lines In Fingernails

There is no specific treatment for these lines in nails. If you have these lines because of a metabolic condition (problems with your metabolism), the ridges will grow out with your new fingernail growth.

  • Keep your fingernails short.

  • Soak nails daily for about 15 min warm olive oil or sunflower oil.

  • Always moisturize your hands and fingernails after washing.

  • Avoid nail polish remover with acetone.

  • Avoid fingernail treatments which contain chemicals toluene found in nail polish, and formaldehyde found in nail hardeners

  • Having lines in finger nails may cause you split fingernails, and daily masaging will help to strengthen them.

Usually they are nothing to be concerned about, and will grow out with the new nail.

Nail Technicians, are usually aware of these lines, and can reassure a client, if the client feels the lines happened from the acrylic nails, or something the technician did.

Depending on the severity of the lines, you may need to seek a doctor's opinion. If you feel the beaus lines are from a lack of zinc or iron, try taking a supplement.
