Biotin Vitamin Helps Weak Fingernails
The benefits of biotin can do wonders for your thin, weak fingernails. It is well known supplement for helping to thicken nails, and help overcome paper thin fingernails. A biotin vitamin can be the answer, especially if you have a healthy diet, drink lots of water, exercise and still have weak, thin fingernails. Biotin benefits your fingernails by helping to thicken nails.
Trials have been conducted on women who had the thickness of their fingernails recorded before treatment with biotin, and found there was an increase of around 25% thickness in their fingernails between six to fifteen months of taking a biotin supplement. It is a B-complex vitamin and is also known as vitamin H or vitamin B7. A biotin vitamin does wonders for your body in many ways especially with cell growth, as it helps the body convert food into energy and helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Biotin converts proteins, carbohydrates and fats into energy and it is usually rare for a person to be lacking in this particular vitamin, unless you are an alcoholic. Alcohol inhibits absorption of biotin and other B vitamins, some medications can contribute to a deficiency in biotin as well, and if taking any medications check this out with your doctor. A deficiency in biotin can lead to depression, hair loss, muscle pain and skin inflammation. Although, if you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it really does not mean you have a deficiency in biotin, you would have to get this checked out before you came to this conclusion. I pride myself on doing all the right things healthy wise so I can have healthy fingernails, yet I have found taking a biotin vitamin has made a remarkable difference to my fingernails strength. For about a year I had one split fingernail on my left hand, and no matter what I tried, it would grow out and then split again. Nothing worked until I started taking a biotin vitamin. Raw egg whites can interfere with the absorption of biotin. If you work out at the gym and enjoy your protein drinks with a raw egg, don't forget to only use the yolk. The benefits of biotin became known during the 1940's when it was discovered biotin helped make pig and horse hooves stronger and harder. Since then it has became known as a vitamin to help people who suffer from weak fingernails. The question remains, how much biotin should you take. I take the recommended amount which is 300mcg; I did increase this to 600mcg for a couple of months and then went back to 300mcg. I guess it will depend on how weak and thin your fingernails are. In the case of very thin fingernails, it would probably be best to start off with the recommended dosage which is usually 300mcg for a week and work up from there gradually, until you get to about 1200mcg. It takes a few months before you will notice an improvement with your fingernails. So be patient and when your nails are noticeably stronger, you can then reduce the amount you are taking back to the recommended dosage of 300mcg (microgram). I think a lot of it is just common sense as to how much biotin you will need, but there really is no need to go overboard as it is a supplement you can take over the long term. If in doubt talk to a naturopath, which you will find in any health/vitamin shop. It is best to take your biotin vitamin with a good multivitamin, a vitamin C or both, as biotin works well with these other supplements, and it is a great combination for helping with thin, weak fingernails. Include more biotin sources of food, to gain the full biotin benefits. The benefits of biotin I think are pretty amazing for helping weak fingernails.
