How To Prevent Bruised Toenails
Do you have blue toenails?
A bruised toenail, medical term is hematoma, can give the appearance of a blue toe nail, and is caused by trauma to the nail plate. In some cases, it may be the cause of a medication you are on, or have recently finished, which is giving your nails the appearance of a blue color. A lack of oxygen in the blood, can also cause blue toe nails, and finger nails, and you may also notice a blue tongue and lips. If you suffer from asthma, or perhaps severe anemia then this will cause your nails to turn blue. People who indulge in a rigorous sport like football, soccer, basketball or running, may notice nails turning blue. It is also very common for sporty people to suffer from a black toenail. Pushing your toes into tight pointy shoes, can cause a blue nail. A blue nail is nothing to be concerned about, usually it is just a blood blister which has formed beneath the toenail, because of the repetitive stress the nails are under. In some cases, if there is a lot of blood, it can cause the nail to separate from the nail bed. Having toenails which are overgrown can also cause a host of other problems, it is always a good idea to have exceptional toenail health. Usually, the big toe is the one most affected, and in many cases painful symptoms will pass within 24 hours. If not, then you may have an infection. Especially if your toenail is swollen and painful. As your toenail starts to heal, there is a chance that it could fall off. Be careful you don't catch the nail on your sock and try and keep it covered, with a band aid. Clean the nail, and repeat the process the next day. A bruised toe nail can sometimes feel as painful as a fractured toe. I know, because it happened to me once, and the pain was horrific, I could hardly walk for days. If you suffer from poor circulation or diabetes, then you should see a doctor if you are having any toenail problems.
It can take anywhere between 6 to 12 months, for bruised toe nails to grow out. You may find your nails turning blue when you have been sitting for a while, and when you get up and walk around they turn back to their normal color. Usually it is just because you are not using your leg muscles. In some cases it could be a blood circulation problem, and if you are experiencing any pain in your legs as well, you really should see a doctor. Many dancers will use sports tape around their toenails, to help prevent any blisters and bruised toenails. You may experience blue toenails if your feet are very cold.
