Clubbed Fingernails

Information on Curling Fingernails

Clubbed fingernails are curled fingernails, or you simply have curled nails and not clubbed nails, following this?

Clubbing of nails may be a very good indication; you have some kind of health problem.

It could also be the indication of an external problem, and simply be, you are dehydrated and need to drink more water, or have over exposure to chemicals or the elements.

Thickening of the flesh forms under the nails, causes the fingernails to widen. The nails take on the appearance of looking round and shiny, and the nail will curve down around your fingertips. This type of nail problem is painless.

It is also possible, for toenails to be affected.

Causes of Clubbing

Can be contributed to a number of diseases; heart and lung, cancer, liver, and low oxygen levels which can be caused by heart and lung disease, problems with blood flow, and hepatitis.

It is a symptom of a health problem, not an actual nail disease, and it can be treated.

Sometimes clubbing fingernails may be no indication of a health problem at all, it can sometimes be contributed to your family history, and it is just hereditary.

I once knew a woman whose nails had the look of clubbed nails, and she was in perfect health.

If your fingernails are curling under and there are no other obvious signs, your fingernails look fine, no swelling or thickening of skin underneath the nail, then there is a good chance it can be fixed.

Remedies for Curling Fingernails

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Take a vitamin B12 supplement; this particular vitamin can help curling fingernails. It would probably be a good idea to include a B complex supplement, rather than taking B12 on its own.

  • Include an iron supplement; get your iron levels checked if you are not sure. For example, I always have to take an iron supplement, as I can easily become anemic if I don't.

  • Massage your fingernails with oil, solar oil is a good one to use. It is able to penetrate the nails and help rehydrate them.

It is important to keep your fingernails moisturized, just as you do your face and hands.

There really is no guarantee, your nails will return to normal. If they have been in this condition for a long period of time, they may remain that way.

Once the underlying health problem, which is causing your nails to curl is resolved, then there is a chance they may return to normal.

If seeking medical attention for curling fingernails, your doctor will obtain your medical history, and try to identify the cause.
