False fingernails can give you the look of having perfect nails. Many women feel long artificial fingernails help make them feel pretty, and it can be hard work trying to grow your natural nails.

Fake nails can be a great way to help you stop nail biting,once they are on, you definitely don't want to go and nibble on your beautiful fingernails.

The four most common types of artificial fingernails you can have are; acrylic fingernails, gel nails, sculptured and wrap nails.

Maintaining artificial fingernails can get quite expensive over time, as they need to be filled at least every two weeks.

The other alternative is Methyl Methacrylate (MMA), slightly cheaper although far more hazardous. This can cause harmful effects such as skin reactions, and can cause fingernail problems.

Also, if this type of material is being used, a knock or bang to your artificial fingernails, could cause it to break very badly. In some cases it has been known to break off completely, and has taken the nail plate off with it!!

It is a pre mixture of acrylic in a gel like state, which almost always needs to be cured (hardened) under a UV lamp. You can now have these types of artificial fingernails done without the lamp and is much quicker.

The goal of using gel nails is for you to grow out your own natural nail, and the gel is basically protecting your own natural fingernails from cracking, splitting or peeling.

The gel is a strong base coat and need only be maintained just as you would your hair color. This is why they are the obvious and most popular choice for many.

Some prefer sculptured nails; these are also a popular choice of fake nail. They are applied to the natural fingernail with fibreglass gel or an acrylic, then sculptured and lengthened over a metal or foil form to help produce the desired length. These false nails usually last longer but need to be filled in on a regular basis.

Wrap nails are made from pieces of material, silk, linen and fibreglass. The material is cut to the desired size and shape of the fingernail and applied using glue, which then hardens and is buffed.

Silk wrap nails are very thin and look much like your own natural fingernails.
