Fingernail Changes

First Signs Of Menopause

Fingernail changes may be one of the first signs of menopause. Many times during this stage of a woman's life, the nails can often be overlooked.

Nails may continue to change right through menopause.

Menopause symptoms and fingernails being affected, can be quite an overwhelming stage for some. Especially if you have always had lovely nails, and now they crack easily and are brittle. You may find your cuticles are a lot dryer then they used to be too.

Your toenails can also be affected during this time, they may be softer and break easily.

There are ways you can help your fingernails and health so you can increase their strength, and once again have fabulous looking fingernails.

Other nail changes maybe in color, peeling, dryness and hang nails.

The culprit during this stage of your life, responsible for all these changes in your body is estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone, and during menopause estrogen levels fluctuate, and this will affect water retention in the body. The end result is, you begin to lack moisture and become dehydrated.

cracked nails

This is the primary reason your fingernails will become dry and brittle, and your hair and skin, is affected. Hair is not as thick as it used to be, skin is dry, thinner and more wrinkles appear.

When your body is going through this natural change, there are steps you can take to help improve your nails, along the way you may help your hair and skin.

Fingernail Health During Menopause

  • Drinking lots of water during the day will definitely help.

  • Keep your hands well moisturized, invest in a good hand and nail crea,m this is imperative, and you need to massage around and into your nails and cuticles. Make sure the cream you use is all natural, and free of chemicals, and contains vitamins E and C.

  • Soaking your fingernails in warm olive oil is a great way to help brittle fingernails.

  • Vitamins to help with your fingernails during menopause are iron, zinc, vitamin C and folic acid.

  • Include a Silica supplement.

  • Eat lots of protein food, especially yoghurt and almonds. I enjoy a bowl of low fat organic yoghurt, with lsa (linseeds, almonds and sunflower seeds) and some raw organic honey to help sweeten it up, every day, and my nails have never been stronger.

If you are undergoing hormone replacement therapy, you may see an improvement in your fingernails. Although, this kind of treatment, may cause other problems, and long term use is not recommended.

If you notice ridges on your nails, this is not necessarily anything to do with menopause, it can be due to a natural part of aging.

Did you know, in Japan some of the symptoms of menopause are virtually unheard of. This is because of their diet being quite high in soy.

Take action when you discover the first signs of menopause affecting your nails, and you will help overcome any changes.
