What Are Lines In Fingernails
Depending on the lines in fingernails, they may be minor or major. If you have suffered from an illness, you may notice lines have appeared.
It can be caused from an injury, to the nail matrix, this is where your nails grows from. It can produce fine white lines in finger nails, running across the nail. This is a very common cause, and these lines, will grow out with the new nail. Severe cases of white lines on nails, which run across the nail, following the moon, can be the result of an illness. These are often referred to as Mee's lines. Mees lines are lines which occur, with no ridging of the nail. In many instances, they can appear from arsenic poisoning and chemotherapy. These lines will appear across the nail bed, running parallel to the lunula (moon). It can be one line or multiple lines. Another type of white lines in fingernails appearing is, Muehrcke lines. This is usually two white smooth lines, running parallel to the lunula, running across one side of the nail to the other, much like Mees lines.

The nail looks quite normal, apart from these two lines, which usually show normal nail color in between the two lines. They are not often found on the thumb nails. As your nail grows, these lines remain where they are, and don't change or seem to move.Muehrcke lines, can be the result of metabolic stress, caused from a severe illness, trauma, injury or infection. If you have white lines, and are not sure which type you may have, or what they are, gently press down on one of your nails, if the lines temporarily disappear, then you have Muehrcke. Mees lines will not disappear. Sometimes a small white line can be the start of fingernail fungus. Although, this will usually look like a small white spot at the tip of the nail on top, or underneath the nail. Ridges which run horizontally are of more concern, and this type of line in nails should be checked out by a doctor. Another type of white line appearing on the nails, is beaus lines. Your nails are made up of keratin, which is a form of protein and a lack of protein, can result in white lined bands running across your nail bed. Eating foods high in protein can help, such as; meat, eggs, beans and nuts. Small white lines in nails, may also be the result of a zinc and iron deficiency, and including both of these supplements, may help. In some extreme cases, white lines running across the nail may indicate kidney or liver trouble, heart disease or high fever. This is why, as you are getting older, it is important to always get your fingernails and toenails, checked out. Most of the time you will find these white lines on fingernails, and not toenails. Lines should be checked, if you feel they are not caused from some kind of trauma, or poor diet.
