The Japanese painted fingernails to signify wealth during the 17th century. Men and women of the upper class would grow extra long fingernails of five inches or more as this was a sign of not doing any manual labour, they used gold or bamboo sticks to support their nails so they would not break.

Modern nail polish became very popular in the 1920's with long fingernails the fashion, the nails would be painted only in the middle, with the tip and cuticle left bare.
