If you are the creative type, you can make nail polish yourself and put your skills to the test. You never know, you may even open up your own market of polish.

Knowing how to make nail polish at home, is a great way to recycle all your old nail polish bottles and eye shadows.

Along the way, you may discover a very unique nail polish color that distinguishes your fingernails from others.

How to make your own nail polish is easy and can be a lot of fun. Have a make your own nail polish party with your girlfriends, over a few glasses of wine......

There are a couple of ways, in which you can create wonderful nail polish colors just for you.

Make Your Own Nail Polish Step 1

You can use an empty nail polish bottle or one that is quite old and ready for the bin.

Put it in a pot of boiling water and boil it clean, you may have to try and dislodge the remnants of the polish in the jar to get it all out.

Otherwise, you can use a bottle of clear nail varnish, or nail hardeners.

Grab an eyeshadow; I like to use my mineral eye shadows.

Making sure your eye shadow is broken up into a powder first.

I much prefer to use all natural products on my fingernails, face and body.

When you make nail polish, it is best to use a natural clear lacquer, which is free from chemicals.

If you want to make a glitter nail polish, get some fine glitter and using a small funnel, can make your own from paper, poor in some of the glitter in the nail polish you have just made.

Or, remember to add the glitter to the eye shadow and mix together. Be careful not to go overboard!

How to Make Your Own Nail Polish Step 2

This way is a little more complicated, yet very effective and is reminiscent of the ancient Egyptians who used henna for their fingernails and hair.

To begin you will need;

• Olive oil (cold pressed)
  
• White clay (powdered) or kaolin clay (a fantastic detoxifier and exfoliant) can buy both types of clay online
  
• Henna dye (comes in a variety of colors)
  

Henna comes from a tree by drying and grinding the leaves and stems.

• Mix 1 tbsp of olive oil and 1/2 tbsp clay together to form a smooth paste.
  

• Add 1/2 tbsp of henna, you may need to add more olive oil.
  

• Be careful you don't get henna on your skin, if you do, wipe of immediately with a damp cloth.
  

• Apply the home made nail polish to your fingernails, with a clean nail polish brush or can use a cotton tip (cotton swab).
  

• Allow to dry, leave on for about 1 hour. If you want the color to be deeper, leave on for longer than 1 hour.
  

• Using a soft cotton cloth, dip in warm water and wipe the paste once it is dry.
  

• You will find a lot of the paste is on the cloth, use this to massage your fingernails in circular motions. This will help to buff the surface of the nails, giving them a great shine.
  

• When finished, use a clean cotton cloth to wipe away any excess.
  

You can do this without the henna.

If not using henna, you only need to leave it on your nails for about 15 to 20 min.

You will have beautiful shiny fingernails, and will definitely get lots of compliments doing your fingernails this way.

Making Nail Polish Step 3

This way will put a color on your fingernails, which is pretty much permanent and will grow out maybe fade out.

• Combine 1/2 tbsp henna and 1/2 tbsp water in a bowl; stir until it becomes a fine paste.
  

• Using a clean nail polish brush, or soft paint brush, paint your fingernails.
  

• Allow to air dry and wash hands when finished.
  

It is usually best to use red henna. You can buy online or at most health food shops.

You can buy "make your own nail polish kits" in craft shops.
