Men Wearing Nail Polish
Society men and nail polish what do you think?
Men wearing nail polish, is it really such a big deal?
If you do a search on the net, "men nail polish", you will find thousands of searches for this topic. So, it got me thinking about all the men out there, who would like to wear nail polish but feel they can't. It really is not socially accepted (yet), and wearing nail polish is considered feminine, and not a manly thing to do. Men and nail polish just don't seem to go together, yet many men obviously want to color their fingernails and toenails. So what is the problem with men and nail polish? I recall a time when I was watching an interview with an aging, yet still somewhat famous rock star, and he had black nail polish on his fingernails. Watching him wave his painted fingernails in the air while talking, I never once thought it strange or that the nail polish did not suit him. In fact, I thought it looked quite good, and not at all out of place. Still, it seems good for famous celebrities (rock stars) to wear nail polish, yet the poor old average bloke, well he just has to hide his nail painting habit away, like the closet drunk. Take David Beckham in a photo shoot with his wife, wearing black nail polish. And it's not ok for the rest of the mere male mortals out there!

Instead of being able to show off your individuality, your passion for different and throwing fear to the wind, most men will only wear nail polish on their toenails. There are many simple minded people in the world, who consider men and nail polish to be something one would wear if they were perhaps gay, or a famous celebrity/rock star. It is rather sad, that we are still so openly judgmental and quick to label a person without knowing who they are. In ancient Egyptian times, men wore makeup, is it really any different to men wearing nail polish? I had a boyfriend in my younger years, who always wore eyeliner. When I look back, I think it was great he could do that comfortably. A male manicure is very popular, there is nothing nicer then a well groomed man. Society is changing all the time, our children now grow up in a world completely different from when I was a young girl, and yet the dysfunction of people's thoughts continue to influence the way we perceive how a person should be. Gay men wearing nail polish can be accepted, as long as he is openly gay and borders on many feminine qualities. But what about the normal man? Did I say normal?? I asked a good friend of mine if I could put nail polish on his fingernails, so I could put the picture on this page, and he was aghast!! He considers himself a man's man, if there is such a thing.......

I agree that nail polish on some men, just would not suit them, as it does not suit some women.Being closed minded about the whole thing though is unnecessary. A man is still a man whether he wears nail polish or not. To all you men out there who would like to experiment, please do so, open your mind and stop living your lives worrying about what other people think. When our lives are determined by what others think, it can be very limiting, considering most of us live very dysfunctional lives anyway. We as a society are quick to judge yet slow to judge ourselves. Black nail polish seems to be quite popular with men, it certainly is with many rock stars and celebrities. What about the well groomed business man with beautifully manicured fingernails painted black to match his suit! Men nail polish in the same sentence, will one day I believe be quite acceptable. Men wearing nail polish is a whole new market, with their own unique manly brand. Images courtesy of Jake Raderick.
