Selenium Benefits

Selenium Food Sources For Nails

Selenium benefits can definitely help with your nails health. What you need to consider is, do you need a supplement? Or are you getting enough from your food intake.

Firstly, it is a trace element, and your body can't produce this on it own. It needs help, and by eating more foods high in phosphorus, you are able to keep them at a healthy level.

When levels are low, it is very easy to suffer from nail, hair and skin problems.

You don't need huge amounts of selenium, to reap the rewards. A small amount daily is all that is needed to help you with common nail problems.

It is great for being able to help the body eliminate heavy metals, build up a resistance to disease, and keep you thyroid functioning as it should. Healthy thyroid function, has a lot to do with your nails.

Root vegetables, which grow in the ground, need to be grown in soil which is rich in selenium.

Some countries seem to have higher amounts in the soil, than others. For example, some parts of Russia, seem to have very low levels. I live in Australia, and in this country, there is very low levels in the soil.

In the United States, there are some regions where the amount is higher, than others.

How to know if you may be selenium deficient, you could have muscle cramps, brittle fingernails and toenails, psoriasis, thyroid disorders, joint pain, just to name a few.

Of course, on the flip side, you don't want to take too much selenium as this can cause, hair loss, fatigue, depression, nail problems, bad breath, some cancers and skin inflammation.

Note that too much selenium or too little will give you brittle fingernails and brittle toenails.

You may notice nail problems if you are an alcoholic, as your body will have low levels of this important trace element.

There are many ways to get your intake, besides root vegetables, you can get it from sunflower seeds, brown rice, oats, eggs, mushrooms, fish, bread, Brazil nuts, walnuts, chicken and onions.

Some meat will contain selenium, if the animals were eating from food grown in soil which has high levels.

Most people generally don't need to take a supplement.

If you want to know what your selenium levels are, you would need to get a blood check from your doctor.

If you are trying to conceive and having problems, you may want to have your levels checked as low levels can cause infertility in men and women.

If you are taking a selenium supplement, to help with your nails, try not to overdo it, around 400 mcg per day, is probably enough. Higher levels of around 1000 mcg can cause toxicity.

It is definitely an important mineral, for helping give your nails strength.

Selenium will help support nail health and a healthy body.
