Stop Split Fingernails

I can't stand having split fingernails, it is so annoying. Every time my nails would start to look good, one would split.

I still get the occasional split nail every now and then, but I am pretty much on top of the problem now.

The medical name for this problem is Onychorrhexis (say what?) exactly! This means brittle or weak fingernails which split often, can have vertical ridges on them and peel.

Causes Of Splitting Finger Nails

Aging is certainly a huge factor with splitting, your body is producing less and less oil and moisture, and you nail beds are usually dehydrated.

Another factor to consider is, it could be hereditary, or you are going through menopause. Your hormones fluctuate quite a lot during menopause, and it can cause dehydration too, so it is important to drink a lot of water during this time, and the extra fluid will help increase their strength as well.

If you are continually suffering from this type of problem, you may want to take into consideration where you are putting your hands.

Water can be a huge problem, when it comes to the strength of your nails.

Constantly wearing nail polish may not help, it can be the cause of your problem if you are using it too often, and love changing colors often. Always try and remove your polish with a non acetone remover, with added vitamins and natural ingredients. A good one is a remover which contains aloe vera

Likewise, if you are always putting on a nail hardener, these can actually cause your split nails to keep on splitterf, not better, they should be avoided at all cost.

Nail polish remover, and nail hardeners, are two of the most common split fingernails causes.

Fixing Split Nails

If only your fingernails are splitting and not your toenails, then this is a good sign. It means it is just an external problem.

Always wear gloves for washing up, and make sure they are cotton lined.

Soak your nails in a bowl with 1/2 teaspoon honey, 1 egg yolk and 1/2 cup of milk. Soak for about 15 to 20 minutes a couple of times a week, until you start to notice their strength improve, then cut back to about once a fortnight.

If you don't have an egg or honey on hand, just soak them in a bowl of warm milk. This is just as effective, for helping improve strength. Cleopatra seemed to be ahead of her time, she would bathe in a bath of milk, and I am pretty sure her nails look amazing.

Nails need to be hydrated with a good moisturizer. This definitely helps, I find it easier, to leave a moisturizer by the bed and massage it into my hands and nails before I go to sleep. This way I don't forget.

If your split, peeling fingernails persist, and you have split toenails, it would be best to seek medical advice.
