Spoon Nails

All About Curved Fingernails

Spoon nails are curved finger nails, this is where the edges of your nail curve up, and the nails look like a little spoon.

A drop of water is able to sit on the nail, without rolling off.

With very severe conditions, the nail will also be brittle, and you will be able to see cracks in the fingernail.

Causes of Spoon Nails

Can be caused by a mild trauma to the nail plate. If this is the case, your deformed finger nails will grow out, and take on their normal shape.

Sometimes, your finger nail health can suffer and take on this spoon shape, if you don't have a very healthy diet and lack certain vitamins and minerals.

A lack of iron is a recognized clinical sign for this type of problem, and you may or may not be anemic.

If you are lacking in iron, take an iron supplement. The best time to take the iron supplement is first thing in the morning 1 hour before you eat breakfast. Take your iron supplement with a vitamin C; this will help the body absorb the iron.

Vitamin B12 is also associated with this type of problem.

Basically, your blood is unable to reach your nails, and unable to help keep them strong and healthy, which is why you need these two supplements.

Problems associated with spooned nails are digestive problems, and your body not absorbing nutrients properly.

Even toddlers are susceptible to this condition, and it usually has to do with a lack of iron.

Curling fingernails can be a hereditary problem, and even though your finger nails have this particular shape, you will have good health.

Fingernail biting can be contributed to finger nails looking con caved, and excessive use of soaps and exposure to chemicals (petroleum based products).

If you feel you have spooned nails, don't let this go untreated, especially if you are considering artificial fingernails.

You want your finger nails to be in a perfect, healthy condition before you see a nail technician. A technician, will not be trained to confirm your problem, but will probably ask you to see a doctor first, before applying acrylics.

The medical term for spooned nails is Koilonychia. It refers to fingernails with raised edges, the nail loses its natural color, and can become flat.

In some cases this nail problem can be contributed to other health problems, and you will need to seek medical advice.

Medical problems which can be associated with spooned nails is; thyroid dysfunction, problems with peripheral circulation, and Raynaud's Disease.

There are many other medical problems associated with this type of nail problem, your doctor will check you for these.

Treatments for Curved Finger Nails

Avoid chemicals in nail polish, keep your finger nails clean and short.

Eat healthy foods, and take vitamin supplements, take a digestive enzyme to help your body absorb the nutrients it needs.

Massage a skin softening emollient (chemical free) into your finger nails daily, this will help tremendously with your curved finger nails. Do this after a shower, bath and washing hands.

Spoon nails and other finger nail problems can be avoided with a healthy diet.
