Toenail Discoloration
How To Overcome Discolored Toenails
Toenail discoloration can be due to a number of factors.
It could be the result of nail fungus, heredity, an unhealthy diet, ill fitting shoes or runners, illness and injury. Toenails and fingernails are usually the most overlooked area of the body. If your toenails are not cleaned properly, dirt and dust can build up under the nail and cause discoloration. It is important to clean your feet and toenails well. Stubbing a toe may cause nail discoloration, especially if there is bleeding. If bleeding happens, it will accumulate under the nail and it can look as though you have a black toenail. Nail color can be self inflicted, by poking at your nails with scissors, for example; trying to cut off a hangnail, a sloppy pedicure or dark polish colors. Aging can bring on a change in nail color, the toenail can become thick, hard and look more yellow. Certain medications, chemotherapy will affect color. A poor diet, will definitely affect the look and feel of your toenails. Liver disease, heart problems, kidney disease or Addison's disease can bring on a change in nail color. A bacterial infection can cause the nail to look a green color, and can be caused by trauma to the surrounding skin of the nail. You may notice the skin around the nail has become red and inflamed. Poor circulation and diabetes, are two of the health problems that can cause toenail and fingernail infections and change in color. Many nail changes are usually harmless, if you were suffering from a serious illness, you would most likely have displayed some other symptoms, before it showed up in your nails. If for some reason, you are concerned about the color of your nails, you should definitely consult your doctor. Of course, the most common nail discoloration is due to fungus, and this can cause your toenails to look patchy brown, white and in extreme cases even black. There is a treatment for toenail fungus if this has caused your toe nail discoloration.
